Tagore can be rediscovered from multiple angles: Prof Azam

DHAKA, May 8, 2025 (BSS) - Bangla Academy Director General Professor Mohammad Azam has said that significant parts of the work of Rabindranath Tagore remain underexplored in the mainstream discourse despite he is being widely read decade after decade.

“Tagore was celebrated during his lifetime and remains revered today. Yet, he was also a subject of substantial criticism. These contrasting tendencies reflect his enduring strength and relevance. We must continue to rediscover him from multiple perspectives,” he said.

Prof Azam was addressing an event marking 164th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore at the Academy’s Syed Waliullah Auditorium.

Renowned researcher and literary critic Professor Syed Azizul Haque presented the keynote paper titled ‘Rabindranath and the Politics of Partition of Bengal’.

Bangla Academy president Professor Abul Kashem Fazlul Haque presided over the function.

At the discussion, the ‘Rabindra Award’ was presented to Dr. Asim Dutta for his contribution to research on Tagore literature and to A.M.M. Mohiuzzaman Chowdhury Moyna for his dedication to Rabindra Sangeet.

The awardees received a certificate, crest, and a cheque worth BDT 100,000 from Academy President.
