DHAKA, Jan 16, 2026 (BSS) - BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi today said Bangladesh's independence and sovereignty remained secure specifically because of the leadership of late Begum Khaleda Zia.
He made these remarks while inaugurating a three-day photo exhibition organized in memory of the former three-time Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson at Justice Shahabuddin Park in Gulshan in the city, said a press release.
The exhibition, titled "The Sovereign Legacy of Khaleda Zia," was organized by the Bogura Media and Cultural Forum, Dhaka.
During his address as the chief guest, Rizvi criticized the energy policies of the previous administration, specifically highlighting the Rampal power plant project.
He alleged that while the Indian government's planning ministry had cancelled the Jharkhand-based power plant project, the "fascist" government of the time implemented the controversial project in Bangladesh's Rampal.
Rizvi further claimed that Khaleda Zia was imprisoned and denied medical treatment as part of a calculated plan because she would never have permitted such anti-national projects.
He emphasized that the country still holds significant reserves of coal and gas, which are now the targets of external interests.
According to the senior BNP leader, regional and global powers are actively conspiring to seize control of these valuable natural resources.
The inauguration ceremony was presided over by Marufa Rahman, President of the Bogura Media and Cultural Forum, and moderated by General Secretary Sujan Mahmud.
The commemorative photo exhibition is scheduled to continue for two more days.
