Legal Aid recovers over Tk 332.42cr for indigent litigants

DHAKA, March 3, 2026 (BSS) - The National Legal Aid Services Organization (NLASO), widely known as Legal Aid, has recovered nearly Taka 332.42 crore in compensation in favour of indigent and financially insolvent justice seekers across the country.

The information was disclosed in a report published on the official website of the organisation, highlighting activities carried out from 2009 to January 2026.

According to the report, a total of Taka 332,42,89,819 was recovered at both pre-case and post-case stages. Of the total amount, Taka 325,45,77,903 was recovered through 64 district legal aid offices, while Taka 6,97,11,916 was realised through labour legal aid cells in Dhaka and Chattogram.

The legal aid programme was initially launched at the district level to provide services to underprivileged and financially insolvent citizens. Over time, its coverage was expanded to include the Supreme Court Legal Aid Office, labour legal aid cells in Dhaka and Chattogram, and legal assistance services in prisons across the country.

During the period from 2009 to January 2026, a total of 13,97,530 beneficiaries received legal assistance at government expense under the programme.

Currently, legal services are being delivered through 64 district legal aid offices, the Supreme Court Legal Aid Office, labour legal aid cells in Dhaka and Chattogram, and the National Legal Aid Helpline Call Centre (toll-free 16699).

The services are being provided under the Legal Aid Services Act to ensure access to justice for financially disadvantaged and incapable litigants.

The activities of the National Legal Aid Services Organization are conducted under the Law and Justice Division of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.
