CHATTOGRAM, March 17, 2026 (BSS) - Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has placed red flags as warning signals at accident-prone bends along the Chattogram-Cox's Bazar highway to ensure safety for travelers returning home ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.
These flags are strategically positioned at the 9 most hazardous bends on this crucial road in southern Chattogram. BRTA Chattogram District Circle Assistant Director (Engineering) Uthuainu Chowdhury mentioned today that the flags were set up from Sunday morning until late at night as part of an initiative by the BRTA Chattogram Divisional Office.
To enhance driver safety on bends, a total of 10 red flags have been strategically placed in rows on each bend, with five flags on each side. This arrangement aims to alert drivers to hazardous bends well in advance. Identified as high-risk areas by the BRTA, these bends include the one near the wildlife sanctuary at the end of Chunti in Lohagara, the Jangalia bend in Lohagara-Chunti, bends before and after Chunti Deputy Bazar, the vicinity of Chunti Forest Office, Lohagara Rajaghata, Mitha Dighi in Satkania, Khanhat Pukur in Chandanaish, and the bend near Pairul Mazar in Patia.
Uthuainu Chowdhury emphasized that the traffic volume on this highway significantly rises during Eid, prompting the need for advanced warnings at risky bends. This proactive measure is expected to mitigate accidents to some extent.
The installation of new red flags is seen as a step towards enhancing early alertness.
However, the stakeholders have stressed the importance of not only temporary flags but also permanent signboards, speed limit indications, reflectors, and adequate lighting.
