Actor Shams Sumon passes away

DHAKA, March 17, 2026 (BSS) - National Film Award-winning actor Shams Sumon died of heart attack at a private hospital in the capital today. 

He was 59.

Sumon is survived by his wife, a son, a daughter, relatives and a host of admirers and well-wishers.

Actor Sujat Shimul told BSS that the popular actor from the 1990s was alone at home today and had not gone to the office. After feeling unwell around 5pm, he informed Shahadat Hossain about his condition, he said adding Shahadat immediately took him to a private hospital where on duty doctor declared him dead this evening.

He added that since the actor's family is in London, the body will be taken in a hospital freezing van to the Channel i office. After the Namaz-e-Janaza at 11 am on Wednesday, his body will be taken to Rajshahi.

National Film Award-winning actor Shams Suman was born in Rajshahi. He completed his undergraduate and postgraduate degrees from the University of Rajshahi. Alongside acting, he was also involved in hosting and jingles. He made his film debut through Tauquir Ahmed's Liberation War-based movie Joyjatra.

Later, he appeared in the 2006 film Bidhrohi Padma, directed by Badal Khondkar. In 2008, he won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Swapnopuron, directed by Shahidul Islam Khokon.
