5 killed by lightning strikes in Sunamganj

SUNAMGANJ, April 18, 2026 (BSS)- Five people were killed due to separate lightning strikes in four upazilas of the district.

The lightning strikes occurred in separate locations when a nor’wester (Kalbaishakhi)   lashed over the region this afternoon.

Habibur Rahman, 22, a student of Badshaganj Degree College, and Rahmat Ullah, 13, son of Md. Jaynal Haque from Islampur (Swarashtipur) village in Joyshree union In Dharmapasha upazila, died in lightning strikes in the Togor Haor areas.

Meanwhile, in Jamalganj upazila, another person identified as  Nur Jamal died while harvesting rice in a haor at  the same time. 

In separate lightning incident occurred in Tahirpur upazila, one Abul Kalam died while working in a haor. Three others were also injured in separate lightning incidents.

Additionally, in Derai upazila, another person named Liton Mia from Peruya village in Charanachar union died from a lightning strike. He was also struck while harvesting rice in a haor.

"So far, we have received reports of five deaths due to lightning strikes, “Additional Superintendent of Police (Media) Sujan Sarkar told BSS.
