DHAKA, May 16, 2026 (BSS)- Registrar General of Birth and Death Registration Abu Saleh Muhammad Yusuf has said obtaining multiple birth registrations for one person is a punishable offence under the law.
In a letter sent on Thursday to all deputy commissioners, divisional commissioners and chairmen of union parishads, the Registrar General highlighted the legal provisions relating to birth and death registration.
He urged citizens to complete birth and death registrations following proper procedures and avoid creating or using fake or multiple registrations.
According to the letter, registration of every citizen’s birth and death is mandatory under the Birth and Death Registration Act, 2004 (amended in 2018) and the Birth and Death Registration Rules, 2017.
It also said providing correct and accurate information during registration is a legal obligation.
“Do not create or use fake or multiple birth registrations due to inducement, fraud or financial temptation,” he said.
The Registrar General said verification drives have already been conducted in city corporations, municipalities and union parishads across the country to identify fake and fraudulent registrations, and lists of such records have been prepared.
He said legal action would be taken soon after finalizing the lists of fake registrations, which would also be published publicly shortly.
He urged citizens to verify their information and contact local registrar offices for necessary corrections.
