KHULNA, June 1, 2026 (BSS) - Former Khulna City Corporation mayor Freedom Fighter Mohammad Moniruzzaman Moni today said Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman consistently stepped forward and risked his life for the country's liberation, independence and reconstruction during periods of national crisis.

"Through honesty, courage, patriotism and farsighted leadership, Ziaur Rahman remained ahead of many of his contemporaries. As the helmsman during a critical period of the nation's history, he not only rebuilt the war-ravaged country but also enhanced Bangladesh's image in the international arena through his diplomatic initiatives," Moni said.

Moni made these remarks as the chief guest at a discussion marking the 45th martyrdom anniversary of Ziaur Rahman. The event, titled "Ziaur Rahman's Role in Bangladesh's Independence, Sovereignty and the Promotion of Bangladeshi Nationalism," was organized by the Former Chhatra Dal Leaders' Coordination Council of Khulna and held at the Khulna Press Club's Liaqat Ali Auditorium.

Council's president and former city Chhatra Dal president Md Tarikul Islam Zahir chaired the meeting.

Moni said following Ziaur Rahman's tragic assassination, his wife Khaleda Zia transitioned from a homemaker to establish herself as a steadfast and uncompromising political leader.
Referencing Tarique Rahman, Moni urged BNP leaders and activists to remain united and contribute to ongoing national reconstruction efforts.

The program concluded with a special munajat (supplication) seeking eternal peace for the souls of the Liberation War martyrs, Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, Begum Khaleda Zia and those who lost their lives in the 1990 mass uprising, the 2024 mass movement and other democratic struggles. Prayers were also offered for the recovery of the injured and the overall welfare of the nation.
