Teenage tourist drowns in Sylhet's Piyain River

SYLHET, June 1, 2026 (BSS) - A 16-year-old tourist drowned this afternoon while swimming in the Piyain River at Jaflong, located in the Gowainghat upazila of the district.

The deceased has been identified as Imtiaz Hossain Rahi, son of Jasim Uddin from Fatehabad village under Hathazari upazila in Chattogram.

Gowainghat Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Moniruzzaman said Rahi had traveled from Chattogram to Jaflong with a group of friends on Monday morning. Around 5:00pm, Rahi was swept away and submerged by strong currents while attempting to swim across the river near the Nazimgarh ferryghat area.

Following the incident, a joint rescue operation was launched by the local police, Tourist Police and a local diving team. Divers recovered Rahi's body after an approximate one-and-a-half-hour search.

The body has been taken to the police station. The victim's family has been notified and the police confirmed that necessary legal procedures are underway.
