
THAKURGAON, June 19, 2026 (BSS) - Veteran journalist valiant freedom fighter Syed Merajul Hossain passed away at BIRDEM Hospital in Dhaka this afternoon after a prolonged illness.
He was 83.
A former Thakurgaon district correspondent of BSS, Merajul Hossain built a distinguished career in journalism, working for several national newspapers and news agencies, including Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), The Daily Observer and The Daily Sun.
A founding member of the Thakurgaon Press Club, he also served as president of its executive committee. During his tenure, the club adopted a constitutional amendment limiting any individual from serving as president or general secretary for more than two terms.
Beyond journalism, Merajul Hossain played an active role in the Liberation War and was a listed freedom fighter under the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs. He was also a central committee member of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) and president of its Thakurgaon district unit.
Throughout his life, he remained committed to social development and public causes, notably the movement to establish a university in Thakurgaon, women's empowerment and the rights of farmers and workers.
He is survived by his wife, two daughters, a son-in-law and numerous relatives, colleagues and admirers.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, district BNP President Faisal Amin and General Secretary Poygam Ali, Deputy Commissioner Rafiqul Islam, Police Superintendent Belal Hossain, acting President and General Secretary of Thakurgaon Press Club, Udichi, local journalists and representatives of socio-cultural organisations expressed deep sorrow at his death.
According to family members, his body will be taken to Thakurgaon from Dhaka this evening. Details of his funeral and burial at the family graveyard will be announced later. A final tribute ceremony is scheduled to be held at the Thakurgaon Press Club before his burial.
