DHAKA, Oct 2, 2025 (BSS) - Leg-spinner Shorna Akter produced a sensational spell, taking 3 wickets for just 5 runs, as Bangladesh bowled out Pakistan for 129 in 38.3 overs in their ICC Women's Cricket World Cup opener at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo today.
Bangladesh, who had marked Pakistan and hosts Sri Lanka as their prime targets in the tournament, now need 130 runs to secure victory in their first match.
Shorna's brilliance was well supported by Marufa Akter and Nahida Akter, who claimed two wickets each.
After Pakistan opting to bat first, Marufa tormented them with double strike in consecutive deliveries in just first over, removing Omaia Shohail and Sidra Amin for duck.
Nahida soon joined the attack, removing opener Muneeba Ali for 17 before sending back Rameen Shamim with a return catch. Rameen top-scored for Pakistan with 23 runs.
Aliya Riaz and Sidra Nawaz got the desired start but Bangladesh bowlers disciplined bowling cut short their stay in the crease.
Skipper Fatima Sana made a resistance which was ended by Fahima Khatun after she made 22.
Shorna then wrapped up Pakistan's innings by picking up three wickets in quick succession.
