COLOMBO, Oct 4, 2025 (BSS/AFP) - The Women's World Cup clash between co-hosts Sri Lanka and holders Australia in Colombo was abandoned without a ball being bowled on Saturday because of persistent rain.
The teams had gone through their warm-ups and were ready for action when the heavens opened, forcing the ground staff at R. Premadasa Stadium to roll out the covers.
The toss never took place and by 5:33 pm local time match officials decided to call off proceedings. Both sides collected a point apiece.
Australia had been riding high after their thumping win over New Zealand while Sri Lanka were beaten comprehensively by India in their opener.
The same venue is slated to host the much-anticipated blockbuster between India and Pakistan on Sunday.
However, with more showers forecast in the next 24 hours, that encounter too may end up being affected by bad weather.
Defending champions Australia will remain in Colombo for their next game, against Pakistan on Wednesday.
Sri Lanka have a long gap before playing England next Saturday, also in Colombo.
