DHAKA, June 16, 2026 (BSS) - Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir today said the Ministry of Commerce would be made more dynamic and effective through skilled leadership, coordinated teamwork, and equal opportunities for officials, as newly appointed Commerce Secretary Md. Ataur Rahman Khan joined the ministry.
Welcoming the new Secretary at the ministry's conference room, the minister expressed confidence that Khan's academic credentials and previous experience in the commerce sector would contribute significantly to advancing the ministry's activities.
"The Ministry of Commerce will play a more effective role in the coming days through collective efforts and by ensuring equal opportunities for all officials and employees," he said while introducing the new Secretary to senior ministry officials.
Highlighting the growing importance of international trade, Muktadir said Bangladesh is currently engaged in discussions on several Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), making it essential to strengthen the country's negotiation capacity.
He announced plans to expand and reinforce the ministry's FTA team by incorporating additional skilled professionals and specialized expertise to better manage complex trade negotiations.
The minister noted that an even larger and more competent team would be required once formal FTA negotiations with the European Union begin.
He also said international support has already been offered by the World Trade Organization (WTO) and various EU-affiliated organizations to help Bangladesh enhance its institutional capacity and develop the necessary skills for trade negotiations.
Emphasizing the importance of a fair and inclusive work environment, Muktadir said talented and qualified officials must be given adequate opportunities to contribute.
"Fair treatment must be ensured for everyone so that capable officials can fully utilize their potential. Eligible individuals should be encouraged without unnecessary barriers," he said.
The minister reiterated that strengthening institutional capacity, promoting merit-based opportunities, and enhancing trade negotiation expertise would remain key priorities of the ministry as Bangladesh prepares to deepen its engagement in the global trading system.
