Case filed over polling center shooting in 2018 election

GAIBANDHA, April 6, 2025 (BSS) – After seven years, a case was filed with Sundarganj police of the district over a shooting incident during the last parliamentary election held in 2018.  

Md. Ayub Ali, son of late Monsur Ali, hailing from Uttar Poran village under Shantiram Union of Sundarganj upazila filed the case on Thursday on charge of shooting and injuring his son Shahin Miah, 32, at a polling center in the union.

Local Union Parishad (UP) Chairman ABM Mizanur Rahman and President of Jatiya Party Union Unit Shariful Islam Shahin were accused in the case.  

According to the case documents, on December 30, 2018, the leaders and activists of the Awami League and Jatiya Party jointly attacked Poran Govt. Primary School polling center, as part of a plan to ensure Jatiyo Party candidate Barrister Shameem Haider Patwary’s victory in the center and the constituency as well.

They entered the center forcibly and intercepted the voters from exercising their right of franchise.

At one point during the incident, Shariful Islam fired at Shahin, leaving him critically injured.

Then, Shahin was taken to Sundarganj Upazila Health Complex, from where he was referred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH) for better treatment.

A total of Taka 15 lakh was spent on Shahin’s treatment. However, despite the efforts, he has been left permanently disabled.

Abdul Hakim Azad, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sundarganj Thana, confirmed it and said efforts are being made to arrest the accused.
