GAIBANDHA, May 27, 2025 (BSS) - Speakers at a function underscored the need for ensuring safe childbirth during floods.

"Due to its geographical location, the district lies in flood-prone areas. That is why four upazilas of the district experience devastating floods every year. If additional services are not ensured for pregnant mothers during floods, their lives may be endangered in emergencies," they added.

They made the comments while addressing a district meeting of the SRH Working Group on Humanitarian Response held at the Civil Surgeon's Office on Monday afternoon.

The Civil Surgeon's Office organized the meeting in cooperation with UNFPA Bangladesh.

Civil Surgeon Dr. Rafiquzzaman presided over the meeting. Among others, Dr. Asaduzzaman, convener of the Bangladesh Medical Association (district unit), Dr. Nazmul Huda, Health and Family Planning Officer of Sadar upazila, Dr. Kazi Ahsanul Habib Mubin, Medical Officer at the Civil Surgeon's Office; and Dr. Amina Khatun, Technical Manager of Field Office of Save the Children, spoke at the event.

The Civil Surgeon urged the concerned authorities to act with more seriousness and professionalism to sustain their efforts and ensure safe childbirth during emergencies.

He also called for encouraging institutional delivery instead of home delivery.

Earlier, Dr. Md. Shaheen Akter, Field Officer of UNFPA, highlighted the role of LAMB Hospital in ensuring safe delivery for pregnant mothers in flood-prone areas during emergencies.
