KHULNA, May 28, 2025 (BSS) - Speakers at a workshop today underscored the importance of adopting appropriate technologies and improved farming practices to promote sustainable aquaculture.

They made the observation at a workshop on the Aquaculture Improver Programme held at the CSS Ava Centre in the city.

The event emphasized the need for third-party certification to diversify exportable fishery products and establish a sustainable aquaculture sector.

The workshop was organised by the Bangladesh Shrimp and Fish Foundation (BSFF) and the Business Promotion Council (BPC) under the Ministry of Commerce, with technical support from the Department of Fisheries.

Md Jahangir Alam, Director of the Department of Fisheries in Khulna Division, attended the workshop as the chief guest. Vice President of the Bangladesh Frozen Foods Exporters Association (BFFEA), S.K. Kamrul Alam, and Assistant Director of the Ministry of Commerce, Palash Kumar Ghosh, were present as special guests.

Md Badruzzaman, District Fisheries Officer of Khulna, presided over the workshop.

In his speech, Md Jahangir Alam stressed the need for export diversification through sustainable, food-based commercial cultivation of other saline-tolerant and marine fish species in coastal areas.

He noted that achieving this goal would require the implementation of Good Aquaculture Practices (GAqP) and internationally recognized third-party certifications.

The Business Promotion Council (BPC), under the Ministry of Commerce, is implementing various programmes to enhance the capacity of the fisheries sector. These include skill development initiatives for private stakeholders, adoption of GAqP, compliance with international standards, and promotion of sustainable practices-with a particular focus on increasing global competitiveness through third-party certification systems.

Md Rafiqul Islam, Executive Director of BSFF, said such initiatives would enable Bangladesh to supply globally competitive fish and fisheries products and play a significant role in the country's economic development.
Over 100 stakeholders from both government and private sectors participated in the event. The workshop also featured an open discussion session, where participants exchanged opinions and shared experiences.
