UN Peacekeepers Day observed in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI, May 29, 2025 (BSS) - The International Day of United Nations (UN) Peacekeepers 2025 was commemorated in Rajshahi today with due solemnity, mirroring observances across the country.

To mark the occasion, Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) organized a rally in the morning from its headquarters, paying tribute to the UN peacekeepers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the pursuit of global peace and security in conflict-ridden regions.

This year's theme, 'The Future of Peacekeeping,' emphasizes that the Pact for the Future. 

Senior officials from law enforcement, military and civil administration including Principal of Bangladesh Police Academy (BPA), Barrister Zillur Rahman; Deputy Commandant of the Bangladesh Infantry Regiment Centre (BIRC), Brigadier General Syed Asaduzzaman; Rajshahi Range DIG, Dr Muhammad Shahjahan and RMP Commissioner Muhammad Abu Sufian led the rally.

Later, a discussion session was held at the Zila Parishad Auditorium, focusing on the significance of the day and highlighting the invaluable contributions of Bangladeshi peacekeepers in UN missions.

RMP Commissioner Muhammad Abu Sufian presided over the discussion.

Delivering the keynote address, Rajshahi University Vice-Chancellor Prof Saleh Hassan Naqib emphasized the importance of the observance in promoting global peace and honoring those who have served and died under the UN flag.

In his remarks, Barrister Zillur Rahman noted that UN peacekeeping efforts could play a critical role in conflict zones such as Gaza, Palestine. 

He also highlighted Bangladesh's significant contributions to UN peacekeeping over the last three decades.

Observed annually on May 29, the day pays homage to the dedication and sacrifice of both uniformed and civilian personnel who have served in UN peacekeeping operations since their inception in 1948.

Bangladesh has established itself as one of the leading contributors to UN peacekeeping. 

Since its first mission in 1988, deployed to monitor the armistice between Iran and Iraq, the country has participated in 56 missions across 40 countries on five continents.
