KHULNA, Aug 20, 2025 (BSS) - Administrator of Khulna City Corporation (KCC) Md. Firoz Sarkar today said that they are making every possible effort to resolve the problem of waterlogging in Khulna city.

Highlighting the issue of manpower shortage within KCC, he mentioned that the number of staff is decreasing day by day due to retirements.

Once this shortage is overcome, the activities of the city corporation will become more dynamic and it will be possible to provide services according to the needs of the citizens.

The administrator made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a meeting held at the GIZ auditorium of the Nagar Bhaban on "Existing Crisis of the Mayur River in Protecting the Environment and Ecology: Current Context of Implementing the Court's Directives."

Organised by Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA), Professor Tushar Kanti Roy of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) presided over the event.

The administrator further said that everyone's cooperation is essential to save the Mayur River, a major water-passing river from the city's drains and canals.

He added that the opinions expressed by the participants are educational and valuable for the city corporation.

Agreeing with the views raised, he assured that all possible efforts would continue to restore the Mayur River to a healthy environment.

Referring to the important role of the Water Development Board in protecting the river, he suggested holding another seminar jointly with the Water Development Board, Khulna Development Authority (KDA), and the Roads and Highways Department.

On the issue of public suffering caused by the construction of the Gollamari Bridge, he informed that the necessary equipment for the bridge had already arrived in the country.

According to the authorities concerned, the construction work is expected to be completed by September, he added.

KCC Chief Executive Officer (additional charge) Sharif Asif Rahman, Chief Engineer Mashiuzzaman Khan, and Executive Engineer Sheikh Md. Masud Karim addressed the meeting as special guests, while BELA's Divisional Coordinator Mahfuzur Rahman Mukul presented the keynote paper.

KCC officials, leaders of different environmental organisations, leaders of civil society, professional bodies, journalists, among others, attended the event.
