Former Durgapur UP Chairman held in attempted murder case

RANGPUR, Sept 17, 2025 (BSS) - Police have arrested Md Rabiul Islam Pramanik, 52, former chairman of Durgapur Union Parishad in Mithapukur Upazila and president of the Union Awami League, in a case of attempted murder and assault during the anti-discrimination student movement.

"We arrested him from the Shimulbag area in Rangpur city at 7:30 pm on Tuesday," said Rangpur Metropolitan Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Ataur Rahman.

The July uprising injured victim, Jasim Mia filed a case against him of attempted murder and attack on the anti-discrimination student movement on July 19, 2025, at the Tajhat Metropolitan Police Station of Rangpur Metropolitan Police.

Arrested Rabiul Islam Pramanik is the 56th accused in the case. 

He is the son of the late Nurul Islam Pramanik of Shothibari Haripur area under Mithapukur upazila in Rangpur district.

Later, Rangpur Metropolitan Kotwali Police handed over arrested Rabiul Islam Pramanik to Tajhat Metropolitan Police Station.

"We already produced Rabiul Islam Pramanik before the Rangpur Metropolitan Magistrate Court," Tajhat Metropolitan Police Station OC Mohammad Shajahan told BSS at 12:30 pm.
