DHAKA, Sept 17, 2025 (BSS) - The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested the main accused in a housewife Sumi Akhter Putul (25) murder case from Cumilla after four years of the killing occurred at Fakirhat Upazila in Bagerhat district.

The arrestee was identified as Bijoy alias Rinku Hossain (38), son of Akhter Hossain alias Kamal Mia Munshi of Ghatura village in Brahmanbaria district.

After a long investigation, the Bagerhat District Unit of CID arrested Bijoy from Laksam Police Station area of ??Cumilla district around 5 pm on Monday, said a CID press release.

On the morning of October 15, 2020, the body of Sumi Akhter Putul was recovered from a fence next to her house in Satbaria village of Fakirhat upazila.

In this incident, the victim's family filed a murder case with Fakirhat Police Station under sections 302 and 34 of the Penal Code.

The Police Headquarters transferred the case to the CID.

The CID investigation revealed that the accused Bijoy had a long-term extramarital affair with the deceased Sumi Akhter. On the night of the murder, Sumi Akhter pressured Bijoy to marry her.

There was a heated argument between them. At one stage, Bijoy got angry and strangled Sumi with a veil and then pushed her to her death. After the murder, he covered the dead body at the scene with coconut branches and quickly fled.

After his arrest, Bijoy confessed to the murder during initial interrogation, saying that he murdered out of fear of his extramarital affair being exposed and to get rid of the pressure of marriage.

Bijoy alias Rinku Hossain has given a confessional statement under Section 164 of the CrPC before the court.
