CHATTOGRAM, Nov 15, 2025 (BSS)- Leaders of the Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar Mohasarak Unnyan Andolan (CCMUA) has demanded the government to take immediate steps to tune the Chattogram-Cox’s bazar highway into a six lane road.
Leaders of the CCMUA at a press conference at Chattogram Press Club today termed the important highway as a ‘death trap”, and urged the government to start work immediately to turn it into a six-lane road as per commitment.
In the written statement, CCMUA organizer Tamim Mirza said the road is an important infrastructure to communicate between the Chattogram port city and country’s major tourist city Cox’s bazaar. But the two-lane narrow road has turned into a death trap due to frequent accidents, claiming many valuable lives every year.
The width of the 148 kilometers road is merely 18 to 22 feet in most of the areas with dangerous intersection and crossings that causes fatal road mishaps almost every day, the statement added.
Quoting statistics from the study of Bangladesh Jatri Kallyan Samity, the CCMUA organizer said that a total of 37 people have been killed while more than 100 injured in 86 road accidents took place in last one year in the 2 kilometer of Zangalia section of Chunati area under Lohagara upazila of the district.
At least 200 people were killed while more than two hundred people received injuries in 300 incidents of road mishaps on Ctg-Cox’s bazar highway in last one year, he said.
Two advisers of the Interim government visited the accident-prone spots on the highway at Chunati after horrible series of road accidents in the span of 3 days last year which claimed 15 people. At that time they publicly made commitment to initiate work for turning the highway into 4 or 6 lanes.
“But we have not seen any visible progress in favor of their promise,” the CCMUA leader lamented.
CCMUA organizers Ibrahim Faruk, Mohammad Masum, Md Minhaj, Md Faruk and Md Najat spoke, among others, at the press conference.
