4 held for illegal sand extraction from Sangu River

CHATTOGRAM, Nov 16, 2025 (BSS) - A mobile court today detained four individuals and seized two dredgers for engaging in illegal sand extraction from the Sangu River in Pukuria Union, Banshkhali Upazila.

The operation, led by Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Md. Omar Sani Akand was conducted in the West Pukuria area.

Local resident Nur Karim said a group had been extracting sand day and night from the West and North Pukuria areas of Wards 6 and 9 using dredgers, posing a threat to nearby homes, farmland, and the Water Development Board's embankment. The dredgers also caused significant noise disturbances in the area.

The four detainees were charged under the Sand Mahal and Soil Management Act, 2010. 

The seized dredgers were handed over to Farid Ahmed, UP member of Ward 6, in the presence of UP members Habibur Rahman and Biduanul Karim.
