Smuggler arrested with rare woodpecker in Mongla

BAGERHAT, Dec 6, 2025 (BSS) - The Coast Guard has arrested a smuggler in possession of a rare species of woodpecker during an operation in Mongla here in the district.

Acting on a tip-off, a Coast Guard team conducted a special raid around 2 pm today near the Mongla Bus Stand under Mongla Police Station. During the operation, the team detained a suspected wildlife smuggler and recovered the rare woodpecker from his possession.

Coast Guard West Zone Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Muntasir Ibne Mohsin confirmed the arrest and said that legal proceedings concerning both the seized bird and the suspect are underway.

He added that the Coast Guard will continue such operations to protect the natural resources and biodiversity of the Sundarbans and to prevent wildlife trafficking.
