NATORE, Jan 16, 2026 (BSS)- A plastic waste cleanup drive was arranged in Chalan Beel today to make the wetland free from pollution with spontaneous participation of locals.

The drive was undertaken aimed at enhancing its agricultural utility and protecting environment of the vast wetland, organizers said.

Chalan Beel Biodiversity Protection Committee initiated the cleanup drive at Tishikali Shrine area. On the occasion ‘shinni’ was also distributed among people.

Singra Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Abdullah Al Rifat, Upazila Engineer Ahmed Rafiq, Chalan Beel Biodiversity Conservation Committee President Professor Akhtaruzzaman, General Secretary Saiful Islam, Organizing Secretary Professor Harun ar Rashid and Model Government Primary School Headmaster Saidur Rahman were present as guests.

Longtime dumping of plastic wastes, glasses and food packets made the aquatic resources of the wetland endangered as well as decreasing the fertility of agricultural land.

Speakers urged all to motivate people to refrain from environmentally destructive activities and increase public awareness to protect the natural treasure.

Organizers also distributed leaflets to make people aware against the use of single-use plastic items and dispose all wastes in the designated dustbins, reinforcing the message of environmental protection and sustainable good practices.
