PIROJPUR, March 4, 2026 (BSS) - The government has officially restored the name of Indurkani upazila in Pirojpur district to Zianagar upazila, reinstating its previous name.
To celebrate the restoration, leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) brought out a joyous procession in Zianagar on Tuesday evening. The procession was led by BNP National Executive Committee member Principal Alamgir Hossain. Following the rally, sweets were distributed among party leaders, activists, and local residents.
Zianagar was originally established as a full-fledged upazila on April 17, 2002, during the tenure of then Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. At that time, Indurkani Thana was upgraded and renamed Zianagar upazila in honor of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman.
However, on February 8, 2017, during Awami League government, the upazila's name was changed back to Indurkani. The decision had drawn criticism from BNP leaders and supporters at the time.
Following the political developments of August 5, 2024, local residents renewed their demand to restore the name Zianagar. Mass signature campaigns were organized and submitted to the Pirojpur Deputy Commissioner and the Ministry of Local Government.
The issue was placed before the National Implementation Committee on Administrative Reorganization (NICAR). At its 119th meeting on January 20, 2025, the committee approved the renaming of Indurkani upazila to Zianagar upazila. The decision was formally implemented on February 24, 2026.
Zianagar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md. Hafizur Rahman confirmed the matter.
Reacting to the development, Zianagar upazila BNP President Farid Ahmed expressed satisfaction over the restoration, stating that the name change fulfilled the long-standing demand of local residents.
