Govt taking various initiatives for journalists’ welfare: Bachir

HABIGANJ, Mar 19, 2026 (BSS)- Managing Director of Bangladesh Journalists Welfare Trust Mohammad Abdul Bachir has said the government is journalist-friendly and undertaking various initiatives for their welfare.
 
“The government has plan to provide retirement allowances to the elderly journalists,” he said while addressing a views-exchange meeting with district and upazila level journalists at Shayestaganj Press Club here today.

Abdul Bachir said journalists often work without adequate salaries but continue their service out of dedication and commitment to truth.
 
The Journalists Welfare Trust is working to support the distressed, underprivileged and affected journalists across the country, he said.

Highlighting the historical context of journalism in Bangladesh, he noted that housing projects for journalists were initiated by former President Ziaur Rahman and later expanded under the leadership of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.

He also assured that journalists in Habiganj of providing support from the trust.

The meeting was chaired by Shayestaganj Press Club President Moinul Hasan Ratan and moderated by journalist Mohammad Kamrul Hasan. 

Local representatives from various media outlets also spoke at the event.
