
KHULNA, June 2, 2026 (BSS) - President of Khulna City BNP Advocate SM Shafiqul Alam Mona today said martyred President Ziaur Rahman had guided the nation in the right direction through his visionary leadership during every critical moment in the country's history.
He said a democratic, discrimination-free and prosperous Bangladesh should be built under the leadership of BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman by following the ideals and philosophy of Ziaur Rahman.
Mona made the remarks while addressing as the chief guest at a discussion meeting, prayer session and blood donation programme organized by the Khulna city unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) at Liaquat Ali Auditorium of Khulna Press Club, marking the 45th martyrdom anniversary of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, Bir Uttam.
He said at the outset of the 1971 Liberation War, when the nation was plunged into uncertainty following the brutal crackdown by the Pakistani occupation forces, Ziaur Rahman played a significant role in organizing the War of Independence by making the declaration of independence from the Kalurghat Radio Station.
In recognition of his outstanding bravery and contribution to the Liberation War, he was awarded the gallantry title of “Bir Uttam”.
Mona said that as a statesman in the post-independence period, Ziaur Rahman established the philosophy of Bangladeshi nationalism and united people of all religions, castes and communities under a common national identity.
His contributions to agriculture, rural development, increased production and building a self-reliant economy remain memorable, he added.
Referring to the current political situation, he said all democratic forces must work together to meet the expectations of the people and institutionalize democracy.
He also called for vigilance against anti-state conspiracies and authoritarian tendencies.
Among others, former Joint Convener of Khulna City BNP Badrul Anam Khan, Organizational Secretary Sheikh Sadikul Islam Sadi, Masud Parvez Babu, Chowdhury Hasanur Rashid Miraj, Convener of the Media Cell Mizanur Rahman Milton, Rakibul Islam Mati, General Secretary of Ward No. 28 BNP Manjurul Alam, BNP leader Sadat Sayem and former student leader Mamshedul Sajib were present as special guests.
The meeting was presided over by Convener of Khulna City Chhatra Dal Md Tajim Biswas and conducted by Member Secretary Habibur Rahman Biplob. Leaders of the City Chhatra Dal also spoke on the occasion.
A special prayer was offered seeking eternal peace for the departed souls of martyred President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. Leaders and activists of Chhatra Dal later took part in the voluntary blood donation programme.
