River erosion takes serious turn in different spots in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA, July 1, 2026 (BSS) - With the rise of water level in the rivers of Brahmaputra and Teesta flowing through the district, the river erosion has taken serious turn at different spots of Sundarganj, Fulchhari and Saghata upazilas of the district recently. 

The river erosion has created a panicky situation among the people living along the river banks of the upazilas.
 
Not only that, the low lying areas of the river basin areas have been submerged due to on rush of hilly waters from the up streams of India and incessant rainfall of the last few days. 

For submerging low-lying areas, standing crops on 118 hectares of land went under flood water making the farmers more worried about the food security of their family members.
 
Many of the erosion victims have taken shelter on nearby embankments and other safer places losing their homesteads and are leading their sub human lives in a word, their sorrows know no bound. 

On Tuesday, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Muhammad Masudur Rahman Mollah visited the river erosion affected Rasulpur area under Fulchhari upazila and talked to the erosion-hit victims.
 
During the visit, DC also distributed dry foods and cash support from the government to the victims to mitigate their sufferings caused by the river erosion. 

In response to the request of the erosion victims, Mollah assured them saying that necessary measures would be taken to check the erosion at vulnerable points including Rasulpur village of the upazila without delay.
 
The DC also assured erosion-hit victim Rezina Khatun of the village to provide her all possible support from the government to rehabilitate her in another safer place within a short time. 

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mostafizur Rahman and the officials of BWDB here accompanied the DC during his visit.
