COX'S BAZAR, July 8, 2026 (BSS) - Eight people, including seven children, were killed and five others injured in a fresh landslide triggered by continuous rainfall at a Rohingya refugee camp in Ukhiya today.

The deceased included seven students of a madrasah and one teacher. The incident occurred around 2:30 pm.

Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC) Mohammad Mizanur Rahman confirmed the deaths, saying four victims died at the scene, while two died at GK Hospital in Camp-3, one at IRC Hospital in Camp-6 and another at Friendship Hospital in Camp-5.

The identities of four victims have so far been confirmed as Rashida Begum, 13, Umme Nejatul, 13, her sister Umme Salma, 12, and Umaisa Bibi, 13.

The injured were taken to different health facilities for treatment.

Local residents, Rohingya volunteers and later Fire Service personnel carried out the rescue operation.

Witness Mohammad Sadeq said a girls' madrasah had been built on filled land and there was also a maktab.

The hillside collapsed onto the madrasah following prolonged rainfall, he added.

Camp leader (Majhi) Dil Mohammad said more than 30 female students were inside the Hifz section when the landslide struck and local residents began rescue efforts before firefighters arrived.

Commander of the 14 Armed Police Battalion (APBn) Additional DIG Mohammad Siraj Amin said the Khadijatul Kubra Women's Madrasah and Hifzkhana in Camp-5's Irani Hill area was buried under the landslide. He warned that the death toll could rise.

On Sunday night, eight Rohingyas, including members of the same family, were killed in separate landslides in the camps.

Meanwhile, continuous rainfall has caused flooding in different upazilas of the district, while the risk of further landslides has increased significantly.
