BRUR celebrates Independence and National Day with due dignity

RANGPUR, March 26, 2026 (BSS) - Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) celebrated Independence and National Day-2026 with due dignity and daylong colorful programmes on Thursday. 

The day's celebration began in the morning with hoisting of the national flag by Vice-chancellor Professor Dr Md Showkat Ali at sunrise.

Later, the Vice-chancellor inaugurated and led a colorful independence procession participated by teachers, students, officers and employees from various departments, offices, residential halls and institutes of the university. 

The procession started from the South Gate of the Administrative Building, went around Shaheed Abu Sayeed Square, circled the main roads of the campus and ended in front of the Independence Memorial. 

Later, the Vice-chancellor paid rich tribute to the brave martyrs of the great liberation war at the university’s Independence Memorial. 

Then, wreaths were laid there by various faculties, departments, residential halls, institutes and organizations of the university. 

A discussion meeting was organized on the third floor of the cafeteria to mark the day. 

Vice-chancellor Professor Dr Md Showkat Ali was present as the chief guest at the event. 

Convener of the university’s Great Independence and National Day-2026 Celebration Committee and Professor Dr Md Tajul Islam chaired the discussion. 

Associate Professor of the Department of History and Archaeology Dr Md Moniruzzaman spoke as the main discussant. 

In his speech, the Vice-chancellor said that on this day in 1971, the new state of independent Bangladesh emerged on the world map. 

He paid tribute to the memory of all the martyrs who achieved the country's independence. 

“Martyred President Ziaur Rahman declared independence. This declaration of independence instantly united the Bengali nation and inspired them to achieve independence through a nine-month armed struggle,” he said. 

Assistant Director of the Public Relations, Information and Publication Division of BRUR Md Ehteramul Huq moderated the entire programme. 

Registrar (Additional Duty) and Proctor Professor Dr Md Ferdous Rahman, Additional Registrar (International Affairs) Agriculturist Khandaker Golam Mostafa, Institute of Research Excellence Officer Dr Md Rokunuzzaman, Deputy Registrar of Establishment Branch Md Tariqul Islam, President of BRUR Alumni Association SM Shahedul Alam Sagar, among others, addressed the discussion.

Marking the day, doa and milad mahfil were held at the university’s Central Mosque after Asr prayers. 

In the afternoon, a tree plantation programme was held at the BRUR campus under the initiative of Rangpur City Corporation Administrator Advocate Mahfuz Un Nabi Chowdhury Don and Visionary Youth Society, Rangpur.
