SANGSAD BHABAN, April 23, 2026 (BSS) - State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Aninda Islam Amit today said in Jatiya Sangsad that the government is making its highest efforts to ensure uninterrupted power and energy supply in the country despite the ongoing global energy situation.

Making statement on Rule 300 of the Rules of Procedure, he said that both the treasury and opposition benches held a detailed discussion on Wednesday on the prevailing energy situation, which he described as a “global problem” affecting many countries worldwide.

“The most significant achievement of the discussion is the spirit of unity in running the country. Following that, the Prime Minister’s proposal to form a 10-member committee to address the issue is a national direction,” he said.

The state minister thanked the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition and all concerned for their sincere initiatives in addressing the crisis.

Amit emphasized that every statement made by the ministry is based on data, logic and responsibility, adding that although public trust in government statements may take time to rebuild due to past political circumstances, the government remains committed to transparency and upholding the dignity of parliament.

Highlighting the current situation, Amit said the country’s peak electricity demand on Wednesday was around 16,000 megawatts, while generation stood at 14,126.35 megawatts, leading to a shortfall that necessitated limited load-shedding.

He noted that the government has prioritized ensuring uninterrupted electricity and diesel supply for irrigation during the peak farming season so that farmers are not affected.

“To maintain fairness, we have decided to introduce limited, experimental load-shedding of 110 megawatts in Dhaka. It is not acceptable that urban residents enjoy comfort while farmers suffer. The spirit of our movement is a discrimination-free Bangladesh,” he said.

On the gas situation, the state minister said the country currently consumes about 3,800 million cubic feet of gas daily while imports average 950 million cubic feet, leaving a significant deficit.

He pointed out that even with financial capacity, increasing imports immediately is not possible due to infrastructure limitations. However, the government has included expansion of such infrastructure in its 180-day priority plan, and visible progress is expected soon, he hoped.

Amit also said that two major power plants are currently under maintenance, affecting supply, but are expected to resume full operations within a few days.

Expressing regret for the temporary inconvenience caused to the public, he assured that the government is working relentlessly to reduce suffering and ensure a stable and uninterrupted supply of electricity and energy.

“On behalf of the government, I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and assure the people that we are making our utmost efforts to ensure uninterrupted power and energy supply,” he added.
