SIRAJGANJ, Oct 20, 2025 (BSS) - A court here today sentenced a woman to 14 years in prison for stealing a newborn baby in Sadar upazila in 2021.

The court also fined convict Alpana Khatun Taka 50,000, in default, to suffer two months more in jail, said Public Prosecutor (PP) of the court Md. Masudur Rahman.

Judge of Women and Child Abuse Prevention Tribunal-2 Begum Salma Khatun delivered the verdict on Monday afternoon.

The other four accused in the same case have been acquitted as the charges brought against them were not proven.

According to the case, Majed Ali admitted his pregnant wife to Sakhawat Memorial Hospital in Sirajganj on the night of February 26, 2021. The child was born the next morning. In the afternoon, an unidentified woman wearing a ‘burqa’ ran away with the newborn baby in her arms.

On receiving the information, police quickly launched a raid and rescued the newborn alive from the house of Chhayran Bewa in Alokdia village.

Then the child's father, Majed Ali, filed a case with the Salanga Police Station.

Police filed an investigation report against 5 people. Later, after a long investigation, testimony and hearing, the court gave this verdict.
