Man to die for killing mother-in-law in Mymensingh

MYMENSINGH, May 13, 2026 (BSS) - A court here today sentenced a man to death for killing his mother-in-law in Haluaghat upazila of the district in 2021.

Judge Farhana Ferdous of the Mymensingh Special Sessions Judge’s Court handed down the verdict. The court also fined convict, Sujit Shil, 42, Taka 30,000.

According to the prosecution, Sujit Shil, a resident of Koichapur Board Bazar in Haluaghat upazila, had been involved in a long-standing family dispute with his wife Iti Rani Shil and mother-in-law Josna Rani over domestic matters. 

On the night of October 6, 2021, while family members were asleep, Sujit allegedly attacked his wife with a sharp weapon, leaving her critically injured. He later entered the adjacent room and stabbed Josna Rani with a knife and dagger.

Hearing their screams, locals rushed to the scene and rescued the injured women. They were first taken to Haluaghat Upazila Health Complex and later transferred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital as their condition worsened. Josna Rani died the following morning while undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Following the incident, Sandhya Rani Shil, the elder sister of Iti Rani, filed a murder case with Haluaghat Police Station.
