DHAKA, Jan 15, 2026 (BSS) - The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) today fixed January 20 for holding hearing on an appeal filed by the ICT prosecution seeking enhancement of the sentence awarded to Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal in the crimes against humanity case stemming from the July Mass Uprising.
"Fixed on 20.01.2026,"said the short order passed by Appellate Division Judge-in-Chamber Justice Md Rezaul Haque.
The apex court passed the order after going through a plea for holding an early hearing of the petition. The matter was listed as item number 58 on the cause list of the Appellate Division Chamber Judge Court this morning.
The ICT prosecution filed the appeal with the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on December 15, 2025.
In the appeal, the prosecution prayed for upgrading the sentence of imprisonment till natural death to the death penalty for their conviction on certain counts of crimes against humanity committed during the July Mass Uprising.
The prosecution filed "Criminal Appeal No 96/2025: Chief Prosecutor vs Sheikh Hasina and another" on eight grounds with the Appellate Division on that day.
On November 17, ICT-1 convicted Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal of crimes against humanity committed during the July Mass Uprising, holding them guilty under the doctrine of superior command responsibility.
The three-member tribunal, headed by Justice Golam Mortuza Mozumder, delivered the verdict after finding them guilty on multiple charges.
Under charge number one, the tribunal found both Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal guilty on three counts and sentenced them to imprisonment till natural death.
Under charge number two, they were found guilty on three counts and sentenced to death for those offences.
The tribunal also found former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun guilty of the same charges but sentenced him to five years' imprisonment, considering his full disclosure of events and cooperation with investigators as an approver.
In addition, the tribunal ordered the confiscation of all properties owned by Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal in favour of the state and directed the authorities to ensure adequate compensation for the families of the July martyrs and those injured.
