DHAKA, April 8, 2026 (BSS) - Cultural Affairs Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury today said Baul philosophy is an important and progressive stream of Bengal's cultural heritage, promoting humanity, love and equality.
"Baul philosophy speaks of discovering the inner self and spreading messages of humanism and harmony," he said a seminar as the chief guest at the International Mother Language Institute in the capital.
The seminar, titled "Socio-economic Survey of Bauls in Bangladesh," was organised by the Bangladesh Baul and Folk Artists Association.
The minister thanked the organisers, researchers, artists and all concerned for the initiative, expressing hope that the survey would bring out the real scenario of the Baul community and play a vital role in future planning.
He said Bauls are among the most talented artists in society, advocating love and unity beyond divisions of religion, caste and class. "Their non-communal philosophy enlightens society and contributes significantly to building a tolerant social order," he added.
The minister said the Ministry of Cultural Affairs is working with utmost priority to preserve and promote folk music and culture. "Baul songs and philosophy are not only part of our heritage but also help foster a humane and inclusive society," he said.
He also announced plans to organise a large-scale national event bringing together Baul artists from across the country to honour them and showcase their creativity at the national level.
Highlighting preservation efforts, Chowdhury said the government is taking initiatives to conserve endangered elements of folk culture, including old songs, musical instruments and traditional rituals, so that future generations can learn about this rich heritage.
He added that the ministry would take necessary policy measures to ensure the welfare and development of Baul and folk artists.
President of the Bangladesh Baul and Folk Artists Association, researchers, representatives of UNESCO Dhaka Office, cultural personalities, academics, artists and media personnel, among others, were present at the event.
