DHAKA, April 8, 2026 (BSS) - The 13th National and 21st World Down Syndrome Day-2026 was observed in the capital today with a call to promote inclusion and eliminate social isolation of persons with down syndrome.

Marking the day, the Neuro Developmental Disability Protection Trust (NDDPT) under the Ministry of Social Welfare organised a discussion and award-giving ceremony at the Social Welfare Building auditorium in Eskaton, Dhaka, with the theme "Let's walk together - eliminate isolation."

Secretary to Social Welfare Dr Mohammad Abu Yousuf attended the programme as the chief guest. Speaking on the occasion, he said the government remains committed to the welfare of children with special needs and persons with disabilities.

"Despite economic constraints in a densely populated country, the government is extending all possible support to children and individuals with down syndrome," he said.

He said that there are 12 types of disabilities in the country, with Down syndrome being one of them. According to available data, around 452,000 people are living with four types of neurodevelopmental disabilities, of whom 8,030 have been identified as persons with Down syndrome.

Dr Yousuf expressed hope that with proper care and support, children with Down syndrome and other special needs can be integrated into the mainstream of society. He also highlighted that many of them show strong abilities in cultural activities and sports.

Professor Dr Abbas Uddin Khan, head of the Paediatric Neuroscience Department at Bangladesh Shishu Hospital and Institute, presented a keynote on chromosome management and necessary care for children with Down syndrome.
