DHAKA, April 21, 2026 (BSS)– Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir today urged Australian investors to increase their engagement in Bangladesh's renewable energy sector, with a specific emphasis on solar power generation.
He made the call during a meeting with Australian High Commissioner Susan Ryle at the Secretariat in the city, where enhancing bilateral trade, investment, and economic cooperation came up for discussion, said a press release.
Muktadir said that the government is dedicated to fostering an investment-friendly environment and is particularly encouraging foreign capital in the renewable energy field.
He emphasized that the administration's top priorities include revitalizing existing industries, establishing new ones, and generating employment.
The minister said that the government aims to activate approximately $7 billion worth of industrial assets by attracting private investment to make them production-oriented.
High Commissioner Ryle acknowledged the significant potential for investment in Bangladesh's energy sector and noted that a high-level Australian delegation is currently reviewing opportunities for green energy, innovation, and technology cooperation.
Regarding economic ties, the envoy shared that bilateral trade between the two countries has reached $5.14 billion and is steadily increasing.
She also highlighted the growing educational partnership, noting that approximately 28,000 Bangladeshi students are currently pursuing their studies in Australia.
The meeting concluded with both parties expressing interest in expanding collaboration in education, scholarships, infrastructure development, and increasing the professional capacity of Commerce Ministry officials.
