DHAKA, Jan 29, 2025 (BSS) - Former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia is making steady progress in her recovery along with enjoying cherished moments with her family members in London. 

After undergoing treatment for 17 days at the prestigious private healthcare facility, The London Clinic, she has now moved to the residence of her elder son BNP acting chairperson Tarique Rahman, where she is reportedly in good spirits.

After more than seven years, Begum Khaleda Zia has been joyfully reunited with her son, three granddaughters, and two daughters-in-law under one roof, a heartfelt gathering that has brought her immense emotional solace.

Her family has created a nurturing and supportive environment, with Tarique Rahman's wife, Dr. Zubaida Rahman, and the late Arafat Rahman Koko's wife, Sharmila Rahman Sithi, providing attentive and compassionate care.

Besides, adding to her happiness, her granddaughters-Barrister Zaima Rahman, Zafia Rahman, and Zahia Rahman-fill her days with laughter and uplifting conversations, creating a truly healing atmosphere for her.

Talking to BSS, UK BNP President and Chairperson's Advisor MA Malik said, "Madam is doing much better now. She is at home, smiling and happy. On Monday, we had dinner together with Begum Khaleda Zia and our acting chairman Tarique Rahman. She seems to have recovered about 60 per cent of her health."

Malek said , who attended a doa mahfi organized to commemorate Arafat Rahman Koko's death anniversary, said that Khaleda Zia's mental well-being has significantly improved due to her family's support.

He added, "Her recovery is being facilitated by both British and Bangladeshi medical teams, but the care she is receiving at home feels even more effective."

Reflecting on her past challenges, Malek mentioned the physical and emotional toll she endured during her imprisonment in substandard conditions, which limited her interactions and access to news.

"She endured immense hardship during her imprisonment under a repressive regime-isolated, without meaningful communication, and confined in substandard conditions", he said, adding, "Being surrounded by her family now has given her a new sense of peace, contributing significantly to her recovery".

"Now, being surrounded by beloved ones, she has already improved by 40 per cent, and doctors are working on the rest," Malek said. 

The UK BNP leadership has called for prayers from Bangladeshis for their beloved leader's quick recovery and return. "The people of Bangladesh are eager to see her back home," he added.

Begum Khaleda Zia has been battling multiple health complications, including liver cirrhosis, kidney issues, heart problems, diabetes, and arthritis. She was admitted to The London Clinic on January 8 for advanced treatment and has shown signs of improvement.

As she continues her recovery in a familial setting, BNP leaders and supporters remain optimistic about her health and future return to Bangladesh.
