HC rule hearing over compensating Ayaan's family March 5

DHAKA, Jan 29, 2025 (BSS) - The High Court (HC) today set March 5 for holding a hearing on a rule issued over giving compensation to the family members of Ayaan Ahmed, a five-year-old child, who died at the United Medical College Hospital in the capital's Satarkul area after botched circumcision surgery, and taking action against the culprits.

A High Court division bench of Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Debasish Roy Chowdhury passed the order today. 

Advocate ABM Shahjahan Akand Masum took part in the hearing for a writ filed in this regard, while senior advocate Md Ruhul Quddus Kazal and Barrister Jarin Rahman appeared for united hospital. Deputy Attorney General Tanim Khan stood for the state, whereas Advocate Mohammad Shishir Manir was present at an intervener.

According to the case documents, Ayaan was taken to United Medical College Hospital by his parents for circumcision on December 31, 2023. Anesthesia was administered to the child for the surgery. But as Ayaan failed to regain consciousness after stipulated time, he was transferred to United Hospital at Gulshan-2. He was immediately put on Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) there, and died on January 7, 2024.

According to the allegations raised by the victim family, doctors at the United Medical College Hospital administered general anesthesia on Ayaan without proper permission.

Advocate ABM Shahjahan Akand Masum filed the writ on January 9, 2024, and the High Court after that ordered investigating the case and to submit its report. It also issued a rule, asking the authorities concerned as to why it shall not pass order to give Taka five crore as compensation to the family of the victim.
