Long term plan for sustainable, modern agricultural production soon: Agri Secretary

DHAKA, May 21, 2025 (BSS)-The government has decided to take long term plan for sustainable and modern agricultural production to ensure safe and nutritious food for all by 2050.

Agriculture Secretary Dr Mohammad Emdad Ullah Mian at a press briefing at Bangladesh Foreign Service Academy here today disclosed the information adding that this plan would be finalized within the tenure of the interim government.

“The government has been working to make the agriculture sector as scientific and technology oriented,” he said adding that all the services of different departments under the ministry would be brought under a unique Management Information System (MIS).  

The government is going to introduce a mobile app ‘Khamari’ incorporating all agriculture related information in it bringing all  mouzas of the country under a database, he said adding that the farmers will get all necessary information from the beginning to harvesting of the  crops  from this app.

He said  government will work for a long term plan to make the educated women and youths as agricultural entrepreneurs, Dr Emdad said adding that they will also try to increase the efficiency of the businessmen in the agriculture related non-government sectors.

“The production of crops is very good in this year specially the production of paddy and others crops are satisfactory”, the secretary said adding that the government has been constructing modern cold storage and preservation centres in different places in the country to preserve perishable vegetables, like potatoes and onions.

There was a devastating flood in 23 districts in August last year that caused huge losses of crops but the farmers could overcome their losses as the government provided special incentives and supervision, the secretary mentioned.

The secretary said government has kept the supply of fertilizer in the country as normal even after the huge payment of dues through correct steps and leadership by the government  adding that as a result, there is no shortage of fertilizer in the country now.

Press secretary to the Chief Adviser Mohammad Shafiqul Alam and Additional Secretary to the Agriculture Ministry Dr Md Mahmudur Rahman were present at the briefing.
