Another child dies in Aftabnagar gas explosion

DHAKA, May 24, 2025 (BSS) – Another child who sustained severe burn injuries in a gas explosion in Aftabnagar, Badda, succumbed to her injuries Friday night, bringing the death toll to four out of the five members of the same family who were burnt in the incident.

The child named Mithila Akter, 07, died around 8:30pm while undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery here.

Earlier, her father Tofazzal, 32, mother Mansura, 28, and younger sister Tanjila Akhter, 04, also died after suffering severe burn injuries in the gas explosion.

According to hospital authorities, Mithila sustained 60 percent burns along with critical injuries to her respiratory tract.

"The child was being treated in the ICU, but her condition was extremely critical from the very beginning," said Dr Shaon Bin Rahman, resident surgeon at the institute.

Only one member of the family, Mithila’s elder sister Tanisha, is currently alive and undergoing treatment in the same hospital. Her condition is also reported to be critical, the doctor said.

The fatal fire incident occurred at night on May 16, following a gas leak explosion on the ground floor of a three-storey house near the South Anandanagar Ansar Camp in Aftabnagar.
