DHAKA, May 24, 2025 (BSS) - Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today paid rich tributes to the memories of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam on his 126th birth anniversary to be observed tomorrow.

On the eve of the day, he, in a message, prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul of the poet.

"On the occasion of the 126th birth anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, I pay my deepest respect to his memory," Dr Yunus said.

Kazi Nazrul Islam is a shining star of Bengali literature, he said, adding that Poet Nazrul was born at a time when the entire subcontinent was bound in the chains of subjugation.

The poet's rebellious nature roared against injustice, Dr Yunus said, adding that he wanted to break the chains of the tyrant with his sharp pen.

The poet was imprisoned for the crime of treason for protesting the injustice and tyranny of the colonial ruler, he said.

Nazrul became known as a rebellious poet because he chose poetry as the language of rebellion and protest, he said.

The current interim government issued a notification in January this year declaring poet Nazrul Islam as the national poet.

The main theme of Nazrul's poetry was the triumph of humanity and a vocal protest against human oppression, communalism, social injustice and exploitation.

Nazrul's immortal creation has given the people inspiration and courage in all movements and struggles, including the anti-British movement, the freedom movement and the great Liberation War.

He stood against religious bigotry, sang the praises of equality between men and women.

He enriched Bengali literature and culture with his inimitable style of words and melodies.

The Chief Adviser believed that the life and works of poet Nazrul will remain a source of lifelong inspiration for the people of Bengal and will play a role in building a non-communal and discrimination-free Bangladesh.

Dr Yunus wished the overall success of all the programmes undertaken to mark the 126th birth anniversary of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.
