DHAKA, March 27, 2026 (BSS) - Bangladesh’s Independence and National Day has been observed in Toronto with due fervour and festivity as the Consulate General organised day-long programmes and a reception attended by members of the Bangladeshi community.
The programme on Thursday began at the Bangladesh House premises with the hoisting of the national flag by Consul General Md Shah Alom Khokon, followed by the reading out of messages from the President, Prime Minister, Foreign Minister and State Minister for Foreign Affairs.
A reception was later held at a local conference venue, bringing together prominent members of the Bangladeshi community from across the Greater Toronto Area and beyond.
In his remarks, the consul general paid tribute to the martyrs, freedom fighters and women who made supreme sacrifices for the country’s independence.
He also paid homage to the proclaimer of independence, Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, and lauded former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia for her role in the struggle for democracy.
Highlighting the ‘Bangladesh First’ foreign policy, he called for collective support in building a modern and just nation.
The envoy expressed satisfaction over the existing Bangladesh-Canada relations, noting that bilateral ties have reached new heights.
He also highlighted several people-friendly consular initiatives and diaspora engagement programmes undertaken by the Consulate under the motto ‘Community First.’
Referring to Bangladesh’s candidature for the Presidency of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, he sought support from the international community and expressed optimism about contributing to global peace, cooperation and sustainable development.
The evening programme featured a documentary screening on the Liberation War, a cake-cutting ceremony and traditional Bangla deshi cuisine.
As part of the 55th anniversary celebrations, the Consulate General will host another reception on April 2 in honour of the consular corps in Toronto.
