DHAKA, Mar 30, 2026 (BSS)- Social Welfare and Women and Children Affairs Minister Professor Dr AZM Zahid Hossain has said the proposed Family Card programme would play a vital role in ensuring comprehensive social protection of the people of Bangladesh.

“The Family Card has already gained popularity among low-income people in Bangladesh,” he told a meeting with Chinese delegation led by Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen at his office at the Bangladesh Secretariat today.

State Minister Farzana Sharmeen and Social Welfare Secretary Dr. Mohammad Abu Yousuf were present at the meeting.

During the discussion, the minister described China as a long-standing and trusted friend of Bangladesh, particularly in terms of development cooperation, strategic partnership and mutual respect. He noted that China is globally advanced in technology, especially in smart card systems.

Highlighting the government’s electoral commitment, the minister said the Ministry of Social Welfare is actively working to implement the Family Card programme. He said the initiative would help ensure family-based social protection covering education, healthcare, nutrition security, poverty alleviation and women’s empowerment for a large segment of the population.

He added that China’s experience in building transparent and technology-driven social protection systems could serve as an effective support for Bangladesh in implementing the programme.

Ambassador Yao Wen appreciated the government’s initiative, noting that the Family Card programme has already gained popularity among low-income groups in Bangladesh.

He expressed China’s willingness to further strengthen cooperation and friendship with Bangladesh not only in infrastructure but also in the social protection sector.

Both sides emphasized the need to enhance mutual cooperation to further strengthen the existing bilateral relations between the two countries.
