DHAKA, March 30, 2026 (BSS) - University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh has directed all unauthorized branch campuses and study centers of both domestic and foreign universities operating in the country to immediately suspend their academic activities.

The directive was issued today by the UGC’s International Collaboration Department through an official order.

In the order, the institutions have been asked to apply for approval to the commission by April 25, 2026.

According to the UGC, it has observed with “deep concern” that a number of institutions are running branch campuses, study centers, and tutorial services without obtaining the required approval from the government and the commission. Authorities have already compiled a list of the unauthorized institutions.

The order refers to the “Regulations for the Operation of Foreign University Branch or Study Centres 2014”, which clearly outlines the legal framework for operating such entities in Bangladesh.

Under clause (i) of section 4(3) of these regulations, all unauthorized institutions must apply for approval by the April 25 deadline to regularize their status.

The notice, signed by UGC Director of International Collaboration Department Jasmine Parveen stated that all academic operations of these institutions must remain suspended until the approval process is completed.

Failure to comply with the directive will result in legal action against the institutions continuing activities without authorization.

The move is seen as part of the UGC’s commitment to ensure quality assurance and regulatory compliance in higher education across the country.
