BARISHAL, April 20, 2026 (BSS) - Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon today said it is the responsibility of the state to support the youth in order to build future generations.

"That is why Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman had established the Ministry of Youth and Sports," he said.

He made this remarks while addressing the opening ceremony of the Second Division Cricket League at Barishal Outer Stadium.

The minister said that a country, a nation, and its future generations can never develop properly if there is no clear path for healthy recreation.

He added that the level of pride Bangladesh cricket enjoys on the global stage today might not have been possible if Ziaur Rahman had not created a path for state patronage through the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

The minister also said that those who were previously in power focused on nothing but plundering.

Therefore, it is the responsibility of the state, society and the government to support children's education as well as extracurricular activities, he said.

He said the current government, led by Tarique Rahman, within only two months after assuming office, has put priorities on sports and cultural sector.

"Developing the sports sector and ensuring healthy recreation is our goal," he added.

The Second Division Cricket League has begun at Barishal Outer Stadium after a gap of 12 years. A total of 20 teams in 8 groups are participating in this year's league.
