DINAJPUR, May 22, 2026 (BSS) - Women and Children Affairs Minister AZM Zahid Hossain today said the government has adopted a zero-tolerance policy against any form of violence against women and children.

"The country's laws provide the highest punishment, including the death penalty, for those who abuse or rape children. This law was enacted during the tenure of Prime Minister Khaleda Zia," said Zahid, also the Social Welfare Minister.

He made the remarks at a views-exchange meeting with locals at Hakimpur Hili Parishad hallroom in Dinajpur.

Local political leaders, administrative officials, people from various professions, and party activists attended the event.

The minister discussed in detail the government's development activities, law and order situation, and social safety net programs.

The minister said that the government has taken the recently discussed Ramisa rape and murder case very seriously as the accused was arrested within 24 hours of the incident.

He hoped that law enforcement agencies would quickly complete the investigation and submit the charge sheet to the court.

The government wants swift and exemplary punishment in such cases so that no one dares to commit such crimes in the future, he said.

He said political identity of offenders involved in violence against women and children would not be considered.

"No matter which party the criminal belongs to - whether from the ruling party or the opposition - everyone is equal in the eyes of the law. No one will be spared. Strict action will be taken against them according to the law," he stated.

Hossain said the government is giving the highest importance to preventing terrorism, drugs, and mob culture in the country.

He assured that the administration has been instructed to work more effectively to improve the law and order situation.

Referring to the government's social safety initiatives, the minister said as part of fulfilling its election pledges, the BNP government launched the Family Card program just 18 days after assuming office.

He informed that there are plans to bring nearly two crore families under this program by 2029.

Through this initiative, around 10 crore people will receive various forms of government assistance and benefits, he said.

The social safety net is being strengthened further for the poor, helpless, and marginalized communities, he said.

The government is working to ensure that no one remains hungry or deprived of healthcare and basic services.

After the speech, the minister distributed grants for the development of various religious and social institutions.

A total of 17 Taka lakh in grant cheques were distributed.
