DNCC initiates step to recover Haikkar canal at Mohammadpur

DHAKA, Feb 15, 2025 (BSS) - Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has taken an initiative to recover Haikkar canal aimed at restoring water flows through graveyard adjacent to Rayerbazar Massacre Memorial at Bashila, Mohammadpur.

DNCC Administrator Mohammad Ezaz inspected the area today to rescue the canal.

During the inspection, he directed concerned department to connect Haikkar canal with Lautala canal and Ramchandrapur canal through graveyard adjacent to the Rayerbazar Boddhobhumi as before.

Ezaz also directed to conduct an eviction drive from tomorrow to rescue the Haikkar canal by marking its boundaries and clearing it from illegal encroachments.

He mentioned that Haikkar canal was connected to Lautola canal and Ramchandrapur canal through Rayerbazar Bodhhobhumi graveyard from Buriganga River via Srikh mouza at Bashila previously.

Earlier, the DNCC administrator, along with DNCC engineers and Dhaka WASA engineers, inspected Dhanmondi 27, Lalmatia and Mohammadpur areas to oversee the drainage system aimed at resolving water logging in the upcoming monsoon.

The drainage system, he said, will be developed in coordination with DNCC, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Dhaka WASA to provide a sustainable solution about water logging in city.

During the inspection, Deputy Managing Director (DMD) of Dhaka WASA Professor AKM Shahid Uddin, DNCC Additional Chief Engineer Md Sharif Uddin, Chief Estate Officer Md Nuruzzaman and Superintendent Engineer (Drainage Circle) Faruk Hasan Md Al Masud were present, among others.
