DHAKA, April 27, 2025 (BSS) - Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) standing committee member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury today observed that there is no need for reform beyond consensus.
He made this remark following a meeting of the party’s liaison committee with the Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP) at the BNP Chairperson's office in the capital’s Gulshan.
"We’re not going to establish a Baksal in Bangladesh. Only BaKSAL professes the concept of consensus of all on any issue which was introduced by Sheikh Hasina’s father,” he said.
“Different parties will naturally have diverse philosophies, thoughts and opinions on an issue,” he opined.
Amir Khasru said there is no scope for reform outside the agreed agenda. Anything beyond this should come through democratic process as per public opinions.
He went on, saying “Why the issues, on which everybody reached to a consensus, are not being presented to the nation. Long time has been elapsed following all political parties submitted their proposals….and the discussion are over.”
It should not take more than one week to bring the proposals to light, the senior BNP leader said adding “I will ask them to tell the nation where the consensus has been reached.”
“Let the nation know and on what basis we will sign the charter of agreement and proceed towards the elections. There is no scope to go beyond this,” he added.
Amir Khasru said, people of the country are reeling on doubts and concerns in absence of a electoral roadmap and it will not carry any benefit in the future.”
The BNP leader said the nation is eagerly waiting for regaining democracy. Elections are the vehicle for democratic transition.
Amir Khasru said the country is ready for election, and there is a preparation also outside the country for the polls. Investors who are coming to Bangladesh are curious to know about the schedule of the elections.
Members of the liaison committee Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku and Vice Chairman Barkatullah Bulu were present during the meeting.
Bangladesh Jatiya Party Chairman Andaleeve Rahman Partha led a 10-member delegation of his party in the meeting. Other members were secretary General Matin Saud, Presidium members Kazi Mustafa Tamzid, Washiqur Rahman, Salahuddin Matin Prakash, Sohel Asif, ABM Azizul Haque, Golam Rabbani, and Vice Chairmen Asadur Rahman and Faisal Taher.
Andaleeve Partha said, his party wants to go to elections by adopting a national charter on the reforms agreed by everyone.
Mentioning that there are 50 political parties and they may have many opinions on many issues, he said “You can’t delay the elections and push the country to a chaotic situation to bring everybody on board.”
In response to a question, he said, “It is possible to hold elections before December. I think the people now demand the election roadmap without delay. I think now the interim this government should concentrate on this.”
BNP started discussions with its alliance partners and allies on April 17 to decide what to do next. So far, BNP has completed meetings with the 12-party alliance, LDP, CPB, BSD, Labor Party, Gono Odhikar Parishad, NDM, Gono Forum, Left Democratic Unity and Jono Odhikar Party.
