DHAKA, April 28, 2025 (BSS) - BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury today said if a government is elected by the people’s vote, it will be accountable to the people, no matter which government it is.
“Our struggle in the last 16 years was to restore democracy, to reinstate the people’s voting rights and to bring back their ownership of the country. If a government is elected by the people’s vote, it will be accountable to the people,” he said.
Khasru said this in response to questions from journalists at a news briefing after separate meetings with BNP’s allies NAP-Bhasani, Aam Janata Dal and Bangladesh People’s Party at the Chairperson’s office in Gulshan.
He said Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus in an interview with Al-Jazeera said the people of Bangladesh still consider the interim government a good solution. But who are those people, the BNP Standing Committee member questioned.
Regarding the election, Khasru said the main political party in Bangladesh-BNP and various political parties that fought on the streets against Sheikh Hasina to end her rule, 50 parties that were on the streets with BNP have already clearly stated that the elections should be held before December and that then the reforms that are being talked about, on which there will be consensus, should be implemented immediately and the Election Commission should be asked to fix the date for the election and move towards the election with a roadmap.
BNP leaders Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku and Vice Chairman Barkat Ullah Bulu held separate meetings with three political parties in Gulshan.
NAP-Bhasani led by the party's chairman Azharul Islam joined it while Amjanatar Party led by the party's president Colonel (retd) Moshiuzzaman, and Bangladesh People's Party led by its acting chairperson Nazma Akhtar attended the meeting.
